There’s a new kid on the block in the ultra-marathon world, Orion Trail Events.
They are an ultra-marathon event company set up to help you complete the Southwest Coast Path in ‘ultra-style’.
All their events are ultra-marathons based on a part of the coast path. Theirr other main focus is on sustainability. They want to make sure that you have the best experience whilst knowing that you are helping to make this planet a better, more environmentally friendly place.
Their first event is The EXND ULTRA to be held on March 25, 2023. This runs from the southwest coast path monument in Minehead and finishes at the race HQ in Instow, 120km, 3,000m of elevation gain and a 26-hour cut-off.
Dan Gittins, Race Director at Orion Trail Events ltd, said: “We are really excited to be launching our first race, it’s been a lot of hard work and long hours, but we think it will be worth it. When people can see what we are building, we think these races will be ones that people put on their bucket list!”
The route is almost entirely off-road. It is generally well marked, as it follows the South West Coast Path. This event should not be underestimated, as it is a tough section of the coast. You will be supported by Orion Trail Events team of amazing volunteers. They will also provide first aid cover at key points along the route, with a qualified mountain leader back marking the race, sweeping behind.
The event is self-navigated, you will be provided with a GPX file of the route, and you will be required to have this on your phone or a smartwatch. They may have a few small signs to help locate checkpoints, finish lines and race HQ.
This is just the first in a series of events they will be hosting next year. Keep an eye on their newly launched website for more details.
