Tackling an Ultra Trail: 12L Gear Strategy by CamelBak (Zephyr Pro & Apex Pro)

Designed in collaboration with a group of elite athletes

Whether you’re racing or out on a recce, the right gear can make all the difference – not just in terms of performance, but also mental clarity. Ultra races demand meticulous planning: from hydration management and weight distribution to how quickly you can access mandatory kit. It’s with these needs in mind that CamelBak developed two 12-litre solutions: Zephyr Pro and Apex Pro. Designed in collaboration with a group of elite athletes – including international Ultra trail star Scotty Hawker – these two packs are built to take on the toughest races, each with a different design philosophy.

Two approaches, one goal: efficiency in demanding environments

>> Zephyr Pro (Men & Women – One size)Designed for runners who prioritise lightweight feel, breathability and an almost invisible fit. The 3D Air Mesh back panel and side cut with no side panels promote heat dissipation – ideal for slow climbs in the sun. The structure also offers a highly adaptive fit for different body shapes. Fit is gender-specific: the men’s and women’s versions are tailored with anatomical cuts and proportions to enhance stability and fit on the move.

The construction is minimalist, yet highly functional: two 500ml Quick Stow™ soft flasks are included, and the front stretch mesh pockets offer ample space for gels, bars and small essentials. This streamlined design doesn’t compromise on space for mandatory gear.

✔ Removable trekking pole quiver
✔ Reservoir-compatible and comes with two soft flasks
✔ Built for dynamic movement – combining stretch and stability
✔ Safety whistle and reflective details
✔ Designed to minimise pressure points and maximise comfort over long distances

>> Apex Pro (Unisex – Sizes XS–XL)

Built for runners tackling technical trails with changing weather, exposed sections and long approaches. The adjustable fit and numerous pockets – front, side and rear – enable modular gear organisation, offering maximum versatility in any situation.

A smart detail: the large diagonal opening on the back panel provides quick access to the bottom of the pack – useful not only before a race but also when passing mandatory kit checks.

Despite its generous capacity and adaptability, the Apex Pro maintains excellent stability during movement, thanks to its close-to-body design and well-placed anchor points.

✔ Foldable and removable trekking pole quiver
✔ Integrated RECCO® system for added safety in remote areas
✔ Waterproof pocket for smartphone or GPS
✔ Reservoir-compatible and comes with two soft flasks
✔ Built for dynamic movement – combining stretch and stability

Ultra-ready. And we mean it.

Both models offer a 12L carrying capacity – ideal for transporting mandatory gear. The key differences lie in their performance on the trail, their design approach and the type of runner they’re made for.

Choosing between the Zephyr Pro and Apex Pro means picking the solution that best matches your running style and the challenges ahead.
