Montane Winter Spine Race 2025: Women’s race winner announced

Lucy Gossage has been crowned 2025 women’s champion of the UK’s most brutal endurance race

Lucy Gossage has been crowned the 2025 Women’s Champion of the UK’s toughest endurance race, the Montane Winter Spine Race. After enduring days of extreme conditions across the brutal Pennine landscape, Gossage completed the gruelling 268-mile course in 87 hours and 41 minutes.

Coming second in the women’s race was #TeamMontane’s Robyn Cassidy, who crossed the line in the early hours of Thursday with a completion time of 94 hours and 31 minutes. Robyn teamed up with fellow ultrarunner Sam Skinner on Hadrian’s wall to tackle the remainder of the race together.

The Montane Winter Spine Race remains one of the most challenging endurance events in the world and this year’s event has been especially tough, with competitors battling not only physical exhaustion but also fierce winter conditions that forced some athletes to retire early.

The challenge is amplified by a staggering total ascent of 10,732 metres—more than 1,800 metres higher than the summit of Everest—and a thigh-shredding total descent of 10,941 metres.
