Tigist Ketema makes it four in four world major marathon wins

adidas’ Tigist Ketema took the victory in the women’s marathon on the streets of Berlin with a scintillating performance, winning by a significant margin of two minutes, 6 seconds.

In only her third marathon, Tigist Ketema’s winning time of 2:16.42 marks the third fastest winning time in the 50-year history of the race. This win marks her firstWorld Major Marathon title, following her win in Dubai earlier this year.

Wearing the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1, launched just before the Berlin Marathon last year when Tigist Assefa ran the fastest women’s marathon in history, Tigist Ketema’s victory makes it four in four World Marathon Majors this year for adidas athletes wearing the shoes, following Peres Jepchirchir’s history-making performance on the streets of the UK capital, Sisay Lemma’s commanding performance in Boston and Benson Kipruto’s success in the Japanese capital earlier this year. Overall, since launching in September 2023, adidas athletes wearing the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1 have achieved three world records and 21 victories, which includes seven World Marathon Major wins, four national records, four course records and an Olympic record.

Speaking after her first World Marathon Major win, Tigist Ketema said: “I am so happy with my performance. I’ve been working so hard over the past few years, especially the months leading up to today and would like to thank my coach for everything he has done for me. As soon as I started running, I could feel the magic of these shoes beneath me and they definitely helped me achieve this victory! This win is the proudest of my career.”

In the domestic competition, adidas’ Sebastian Hendel and Melat Kejeta were the fastest Germans with times of 2:07.33 and 2:23.40 in the men’s and women’s races respectively, both wearing the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1 shoe.
