adidas athletes Tigist Assefa and Sabastian Sawe storm to victory in London Marathon

With five of 12 podium spots in this years’ London and Boston marathons featuring Adizero – more than any other brand – the wins build on the legacy of the adidas’ Adizero franchise

adidas celebrated 10 days of racing dominance for its Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1 and 2-wearing athletes, highlighted by Tigist Assefa and Sabastian Sawe delivering an astonishing double victory in the British capital – with Assefa defiantly setting a new women’s only world record. The win follows a week of highlights including two podium spots in Boston and one world record broken at the brand’s Adizero Road to Records 2025 race event.

With five of 12 podium spots in this years’ London and Boston marathons featuring Adizero – more than any other brand – the wins build on the legacy of the adidas’ Adizero franchise, which has helped athletes secure 200+ victories at key running and track competitions and shatter 26 world records since 2020.

Tigist Assefa took on one of the most competitive fields ever seen in the British capital, crossing the line in an incredible 2:15:50 in the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1 to set a new women’s only world record, exceeding the previous record by 26 seconds. Today’s victory makes it three World Marathon Majors for the former world record holder who made her mark in the history books with an iconic performance on the streets of Berlin two years ago.

In the men’s race, Sabastian Sawe broke away from the pack to take a commanding lead heading into the closing stages of the race, finishing in a winning time of 2:02:27 in the newly unveiled Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2. The victory marks the latest success for the Kenyan following his win on the East Coast of Spain last year. Last year’s winner in the British capital, Alexander Mutiso Munyao, crossed the line in 2:04:20 to claim third place.

Sawe and Munyao were one of the first to debut the latest release under the industry-changing line-up, which packs 3mm more of adidas’ LIGHTSTRIKE PRO EVO foam in the forefoot, resulting in an almost 10% increase in forefoot stack height [compared to its predecessor]. Lab testing shows this delivers a 5% increase in energy return when compared to the record-breaking Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1.

11 records were set at the fifth edition of Adizero: Road to Records held at the brand’s headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany. This included Agnes Ngetich setting a new women’s only world record in the 10km, clocking a history-defining time of 29:27 wearing the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1. Two under-20 world records, four continental records and four national records were also set at the event which brought together 140 of the world’s greatest athletes for a day of record-breaking.

Meanwhile at the Boston Marathon, Alphonce Simbu and Cybrian Kotut delivered impressive performances to earn spots on the podium at the world’s oldest marathon. Simbu secured second place (2:05:04) while Kotut came in third, micro-seconds behind (2:05:04). Both athletes wore the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2.

Adizero For The Fast Experience

Since Thursday this week, adidas celebrated the Adizero franchise and the newly unveiled Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 by hosting a three-day event at a bespoke activation space in St Martin-in-the-Fields near Trafalgar Square. The event featured a number of different activities which recognised the city’s fast runners and cultural pioneers. These activities included:

  • An immersive experience on the Friday which saw Holborn’s Kingsway Tunnel turned into a ‘Fast Track’, where guests laced up the new Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 and pushed themselves to match the finishing pace of adidas athlete Peres Jepchirchir
  • Musical performances from some of the UK’s leading artists, including Giggs and DJ duo Overmono
  • Panel sessions led by community leaders, as well as shake out runs around the British capital.
