The TOPO MTN Racer 3 designed for the trail

If I am honest, I would say that the Topo Athletic MTN 3 Racer was a genuine surprise for me

The MTN Racer 3 is the third iteration of Topo’s trail running shoe that has been specifically designed for runners who are looking for a combination of speed, comfort and durability on rugged terrain. This shoe has some key improvements from its predecessors, which we will touch on below.

Let’s start with the basics. These MTN Racer 3 shoes are designed for trail running and trail racing. They come with a 5mm heel-to-toe drop and weigh in at 10.1 ounces (283g) for men’s size 9. The lower heel drop is a bonus if, like me, you are a mid-sole striker. They are gaiter compatible which is useful if you are used to using them, especially in races. The insoles are Ortholite which are surprisingly comfortable and have the added benefit of anti-microbial properties.  The Vibram MegaGrip outsole gives a strong grip and should provide good durability. It should be noted that I haven’t tried these out on wet rocks or mud yet, but I am interested to see how they perform. These shoes don’t feature a rock plate but Topo has added their ZipFoam, which is their signature EVA blend, that incorporates thermal plastic material and is supposed to be a bit springier than just regular EVA. While it is surprisingly comfortable, I could still feel the terrain underfoot.

The MTN 3 Racer has a sleek design but maintains an air of ruggedness which hints at what they are designed for. I like the bold yet not overbearing branding and the simple two-colour approach. The mesh material that runs from the heel to the toe continuously, and on the tongue, should allow the shoe to be breathable yet durable. The updated lacing system does provide a nice snug fit without being uncomfortable and the addition of two loops on the tongue itself should prevent the tongue from moving.  The design of the ZipFoam gives the shoe and modern, off-road look. I like the laces, which, surprisingly, isn’t always the case. My only concern is that the toe protection is less than on my Brooks Cascadia’s and I am prone to kicking rocks on the trails.

A big bonus for me was the fit, as my feet need a little extra width at the front. The toe-box is wide but not too roomy so, in theory, my foot can splay naturally, which in turn should give better stability and comfort.

For a trail shoe, the performance on technical terrain is very important, and while I haven’t tested these shoes on my normal more extreme routes, I could tell that they are impressive. The MTN 3 Racer features a Vibram MegaGrip outsole which provides exceptional traction. The multi-directional lugs are strategically placed to increase the grip on different terrains and they have good depth (3.5mm). With the midsole being made from ZipFoam, the grip is complimented with a responsive and cushioned ride..

I haven’t had the shoes long enough to comment on the Topo MTN 3 Racer’s durability but the shoes look to be well made with no signs of short-cuts and having read several reviews there seem to be no complaints of wear and tear.

Conclusion:

If I am honest, I would say that the Topo Athletic MTN 3 Racer was a genuine surprise for me. It is not a shoe I had heard much about but after I had slipped them on and been for a run, I had a positive experience. After some additional research, I was interested to find comments like “My Feet Have Found A Forever Home”, “Goodbye Altra – Hello Topo!!” and “Amazing shoe! Superior to the Hoka Speedgoat IMO.” These are bold statements, and I can’t wait to push them a little further to see how they last and perform on more technical, long-distance trails. In summary, these are shoes that I can see myself using on long days in the mountains and on nice sweeping trails, especially as I prefer lightweight shoes. They would be a good choice for anyone who would benefit from the anatomic toe box and are looking for a comfortable shoe with a good grip that will go the distance.
