The 2023 Montane Dragon’s Back Race started at 6am on Monday morning, September 4, when 298 ultra runners from 25 nations set out from Conwy Castle.
Regarded by many as the world’s toughest multi-stage mountain race, the event will see participants tackle 380km of distance and 17,400m of ascent over the next six days.
The Montane Dragon’s Back Race route heads south along the mountainous spine of Wales and participants face climbs up iconic peaks such as Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Tryfan, the Glyders, Cnicht, the Rhinogs, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan, as they aim to reach Cardiff Castle on Saturday, September 9. For the first time, runners at this year’s race can choose to take on the shorter ‘Hatchling’ course, tackling the first or second half of each day during the event.
Competition will be fierce at the front of the race, with some of the world’s leading male and female ultra-runners taking part in the race. However, for many athletes, the priority will simply be to complete the course in the allowed time.
