Montane Winter Spine Race: Athletes in the Spotlight

As extreme conditions force unexpected retirements, participants continue to battle through Britain's most brutal race in the Pennines

As the Montane Winter Spine Race continues, athletes are battling through harsh conditions in the Pennines, with Montane athlete Robyn Cassidy currently leading the women’s race.

Yesterday, James Allen emerged as the Men’s Winner of the Montane Winter Spine Challenger South with Alice Kershaw taking the top spot in the Women’s Spine Challenger South.

As participants across all race formats continue to test their limits, #TeamMontane is making waves with some exciting developments in both the full race and the Montane Spine Sprint.

#TeamMontane Race Progress Highlights:

  • Montane athlete Robyn Cassidy is currently leading the women’s race in the full Montane Spine Race and has placed an impressive 8th overall. With her strong performance, Robyn continues to make her mark in the race to the finish line.
  • In the Montane Spine Sprint, #TeamMontane athlete Tom Hollins secured joint second place, showcasing incredible endurance and strategy on the demanding course.
  • Over in the Montane Challenger North, Montane athlete Jon Shield is among the leaders, continuing to push through the gruelling course.
  • The conditions are proving treacherous as Montane athlete Simon Roberts has been forced to retire from the full race after injuring an ankle on the course. Mark Darbyshire has also had to retire from the Challenger South.

The Montane Spine Race full distance event started at 8.00am on Sunday 12th Jan and is complemented by the 108-mile Montane Spine Challenger South, the 46-mile Montane Spine Sprint, and the 160-mile Montane Spine Challenger North.
